14TH ANNUAL CONGRESS OF AFRICAN PEOPLE’S CONVENING

The Congress of African of Peoples in conjunction with various community partners present annual convening Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 8:30am until 4:00pm at Women’s Civic Improvement Center (WCIC), 3555 3rd Ave., Sacramento, CA 95817.

2016 Theme/Topic: “Black Lives Matter”. The keynote speaker: Dr. Melina Abdullah, Founder, Los Angeles Chapter, Black Lives Matter, from 9:15 – 9:45am; and Luncheon Speakers: 12:40pm – 1:45pm Assemblymembers Jim Cooper and Kevin McCarty.

Dr. Melina Abdullah is Professor and Chair of Pan-African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles and immediate past campus president and current Council for Affirmative Action Chair for the California Faculty Association (the faculty union). Dr. Abdullah earned her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Political Science and her B.A. from Howard University in African-American Studies. She was appointed to the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission in 2014 and is a recognized expert on race relations. She is an organizer at the Los Angeles branch of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The 3rd Annual Sacramento Black Book Fair (SBBF)

The 3rd Annual Sacramento Black Book Fair (SBBF) is sponsored by The Black Group. The Fair is an offshoot of Blue Nile Press a Sacramento Publisher of Black Books. This historic event will take place from June 3-5, 2016, in historic Oak Park, at eight different venues: underground books, Brick house Art Gallery, Guild Theater, Sacramento Food Bank, Women’s Civic Improvement Club/Center, the historic Alpha Kappa Sorority house, McClatchy Park, and University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

It will bring writers, publishers, readers, children’s area, a community parade and vendors from Sacramento, the state, the country, and the international community, to a celebration of reading and writing, right here in River City.

The event headquarters and check-in site will be housed at the historic Women’s Civic Improvement Club/ Center (WCIC), 3555 3rd Ave., Sacramento, CA 95817. SBBF is free and open to the general public.
